The game of the day came at the Galpharm Stadium with Huddersfield coming from behind to record a stunning 4-2 victory over Yeovil. With just fifteen minutes gone Yeovil had taken a shock 2-0 lead with goals from Dean Bowdich and Paul Huntington. An inspiring team talk saw Huddersfield return to the field in a determined fashion, pulling a goal back inside the first four minutes thanks to a magnificent outside-of-the-boot effort from Scott Arfield. Defender Jamie McCombe headed in the equaliser before finding himself on the edge of the penalty area where he turned the defender and coolly slotted home his second of the day. Gary Roberts scored a debatable penalty to complete the second half comeback and send his side to the top of League One.
At St James Park a shocking own goal by Exeter’s Troy Archibald-Henville gifted Peterborough the lead midway through the first half. The home side regained their composure after the break and hit back with a cracking effort from Daniel Nardiello. Nineteen minutes from time, The Grecians took the lead through Jamie Cureton, netting his first goal for the club since his summer move from Norwich. Then with only ten minutes remaining, Peterborough’s Lee Tomlin snatched an equaliser.
Southampton continued their poor run of form since sacking Alan Pardew, whilst Colchester prolonged their unbeaten start of the season. Saints, the red-hot favourites for the title, had much of the possession, but failed to convert any of their chances, with Ricky Lambert the main culprit. Colchester’s Ashley Vincent nearly ever so cruelly nicked all three points in the final minute, if it wasn’t for a fine save by Saints keeper Kelvin Davis. Where as the Saints have now failed to score in their past five games in all competitions, Colchester remain undefeated, incredibly drawing five matches already.
In the battle between last year’s two relegated sides from the Championship, 10-man Plymouth came out on top 3-2. The Pilgrims took the lead through Carl Fletcher, before James O’Connor drew level just before half time. Some hesitant defending from Bondz Ngala, allowed Neil Mellor to sprint past, only to be hauled down by the advancing Ngala, resulting in a red card. This clearly didn’t dampen their spirits, as they regained the lead shortly into the second half, as Bradley Wright-Phillips powered in a header from eight yards out. The Owls then scored an absolute screamer through Tommy Miller with fifteen minutes to go. But Peter Reid’s men responded in dramatic fashion, as just two minutes later Craig Noon headed home to secure all three points.
Elsewhere Oldham came from behind to beat in-form Bournemouth 2-1. The South coast side went in front thanks to a smart Royce Wiggins free kick at the end of the first half. Oldham, asleep for most of the game, woke up with twelve minutes remaining. Kieron Lee grabbed an equalised, before Oumare Tounkare netted minutes later. The result means Oldham leapfrog the visitors into 6th position.
Carlisle United laboured to their second 0-0 in three matches, as they failed to breakdown the gritty Seagulls. Although Carlisle remain unbeaten, they will be disappointed not to have collected all three points.
The points were also shared between MK Dons and Rochdale, in a cagey affair at Stadium:mk. Rochdale went in front as Jason Kennedy capitalised on a defensive blunder by Angela Belanta. Shortly after, Mathias Doumbe equalised for the Dons, heading in a corner for his first goal in exactly a year.
In an entertaining game at Meadow Lane, Notts County beat Leyton Orient 3-2 to move up to 12th in the table. The Magpies squandered an early 2-0 lead, as Orient bravely fought back with goals from Ryan Jarvis and Matt Spring. Unfortunately for the visitors, this proved to be in vain, as Hughes grabbed his second of the match, slotting in from six yards to save their blushes.
Midtable Charlton drew away to struggling Tranmere Rovers. The Addicts went infront, after Tranmere’s on-loan Liverpool keeper Peter Gulacsi woefully spilled an unthreatening freekick, allowing Scott Wagstaff to pounce. Tranmere drew level shortly after the interval, as their giant centre forward Enoch Showunmi smashed home after a Dale Jennings header was saved.
Dagenham & Redbridge remain rooted to the bottom of the table, as they were convincingly beaten 3-0 by Bristol. Whilst Swindon won 2-1 away at Walsall, with goals from Reuben Reid and Vincent Pericard.
