Bitesize Championship Round-Up

There were wins all away from home for the top four sides in the division last time out. The biggest win was for Norwich. The canaries piled more misery on Bristol city with a 3-0 victory at Ashton gate. Simeon Jackson scored either side of half time and Wes Hoolahan scored a penalty between the two. This leaves Bristol City at the foot of the Table with only six points.  Cardiff stayed second after a 2-1 win over Barnsley. Goals from Bellamy and Olofinjana were enough for the win.

Watford won at struggling Sheffield Utd 1-0. Marvin Sordell scored his sixth of the season to keep Watford’s unexpectedly good start to the season on-going. It was a late show that secured QPR all three points at Neil Warnock’s old stamping ground Crystal Palaces Selhurst Park. Former Crystal Palace players Clint Hill and Shaun Derry also made a winning return to their old club. But it was goals from Adel Taarabt and Hediar Helguson in the 3rd minute of injury time that did the job. That makes QPR’s record 5 Wins from their last six games and keeps them six points clear at the top.

Leicester City made a good start to life without Paulo Sousa as they beat Scunthorpe United 3-1 for their second win of the season. This win was in front of their new boss probably the shock managerial appointment of the season so far, ex-England boss Sven Goran-Ericksson. Sven was appointed as manager after this game and re-iterated that his ambition is for a Premier League return. This win moved Leicester up to 22nd in the table.

Pressure is every increasing on Gordon Strachan after another poor result at home. Middlesbrough were 2-0 up against struggling Portsmouth. However a great second half display from Pompey got them a great point as the match ended 2-2. Middlesbrough are now in 18th and Pompey are in 21st.  Meanwhile Ipswich kept up their promotion hopes with a 2-1 win over Leeds at Portman Road. This keeps the Tractor boys 5th in the table.

There were six draws in the Championship this weekend. Doncaster and Nottingham Forest drew 1-1, Millwall and Burnley also drew 1-1 and so did Preston and Reading. Burnley’s draw keeps them in the playoffs in 6th position ahead of Reading. Hull city and Coventry drew 0-0, as did Swansea and Derby County. These points keeping Swansea and Coventry in the hunt for the playoff places, 8th and 9th respectively.
