The Championship: Welsh teams on the hunt as Portsmouth rise like Lazarus

Cardiff went two points clear at the top of the table after beating Norwich 3-1 at home. All the action happened in the first half with all four goals being scored. Jay Bothroyd opened the scoring and Michael Chopra then doubled the lead. Wes Hoolahan got one back for Norwich but Peter Whittingham scored from the penalty spot to finish the scoring. Despite this result Norwich are still in the playoffs in 5th place.

QPR slipped to second in the table behind Cardiff after drawing again, this time with Burnley. After starting the season in great goal scoring form they are now starting to struggle to make goals. Adel Taarabt opened the scoring for QPR but then Gary Alexander equalised from the penalty spot. This leaves Burnley outside the playoff spots in 8th place.

This weekend saw Tony Mowbray start his time as Manager of Middlesbrough with a massive bottom of the table clash with Bristol City at the Riverside. It did not go to plan for the new manager however, after taking the lead his side eventually slumped to another defeat. The game finished 2-1 to Bristol after goals from Adomah and Elliot, Kris Boyd getting the opener for Middlesbrough. This result leaves both teams in the relegation zone but does lift Bristol City of the bottom of the table to 22nd and Middlesbrough are now 23rd.

Coventry continued their push for promotion after a win over Sheffield United. The game ended 1-0 after a goal from Gary McSheffrey. This puts a bit more pressure on Gary Speed who since taking over has not really got the Sheffield United team going in the right direction and they are now in 18th place in the table. It is a different story for Coventry who are up to 4th in the table.

Just above Coventry are Swansea who are in third after beating struggling Crystal Palace. The Eagle's off the field problems might have been resolved in the summer but their on field problems are far from over. Swansea won this match 3-0 after goals from top scorer Sinclair, Pratley and Allen gave Swansea the win. Swansea are now four points behind second in the table QPR and Crystal Palace are rock bottom.

Leicester relieved some pressure on themselves and heaped more onto Preston with a 1-0 win at the Walkers Stadium. A goal from Gallagher was enough to clinch the win for Leicester. This result also makes life more awkward for Preston manager Darren Ferguson with the club hovering above the drop zone in 21st. Leicester now move up to 19th in the table.

Hull City are being dragged into the relegation battle after a 1-1 draw with Barnsley. Barnsley took the lead through Hammill in the first half but Hull equalised in the second half through Kevin Kilbane. However, Hull continue to slide down the table and are in 20th whilst Barnsley are in 17th position in the table.

Reading moved up into the playoffs after a thrilling come back against Doncaster at the Madejski stadium. Doncaster were 3-1 up but Reading managed to pull off a super reverse of fortune, winning 4-3. Reading took the lead through Matt Mills but Doncaster equalised through Hayter. Doncaster took a 3-1 lead with goals from Martis and Shiels. Reading then scored through Jem Karacan and equalised through Ian Harte. Simon Church then scored the winner for Reading who are up to 6th place, Doncaster are in 15th.

Derby pulled off a massive win over Watford winning 4-1. Watford, this year’s surprise team, were hammered at Pride Park. Goals from Brayford, Kuqi and a brace from Cywka gave Derby a huge win. Wichelow got the consolation for Watford. The Hornets dropped to 9th and Derby are up to 7th in the table.

Portsmouth's resurgence continues after beating Nottingham Forest at Fratton Park. They pulled off a 2-1 win after goals from Sonko and Liam Lawrence. With this form Portsmouth could be gunning for a quick return to the premier league. This result puts them into the top ten and Nottingham Forest fall into the bottom half at 13th.

Leeds hammered Scunthorpe away from home this week winning 4-1. A superb fifteen minute hat trick from Jonny Howson gave Leeds the win. Leeds took the Lead through Max Gradel and Scunthorpe equalised with a goal from Byrne before it turned in to the Howson show. Scunthorpe drop to 16th and Leeds are up to 12th in the table.

Ipswich got their first win in three matches after beating Millwall 2-0 at Portman Road. Goals from Jason Scotland and a penalty from Grant Leadbitter gave them a much needed win. This leaves Ipswich in 11th and Millwall in 14th place in the table.
